We are very grateful to be able to stage this production at the Howard Theatre in Downing College and plan to make the most of this unique setting. A high-energy, character-driven production using off-stage effects to acknowledge the ‘magical’ setting but mainly focused on the human participants and the ‘humanity behind the magic’. With an edited script, naturalistic acting and a core cast of 15, the production will give a range of acting opportunities suitable for a variety of ages and previous experience with Shakespeare. Part of the mystery left to the audience to decide is how much of the ‘magic’ is within Prospero’s own inner conflict and how much is truly the mystery of the island. Apart from certain key characters, the majority of roles will be open to either male of female actors and simply cast on individual ability and interpretation. The gender and ages listed below are, therefore, given only as a broad guide! If the gender is changed at casting then the script will be adapted to allow for this.

PROSPERO Torn between revenge & goodness. More thoughtful than just ‘mystical’. The conflict between revenge and justice is central to the production and key to the humanity of the play. An essentially good and strong character. (circa 40-60)
ARIEL Lively, spirited imp caught between loyalty and rebellion. Clever & agile! Playful and essentially true to Prospero but desperate to be free. Also acts as Prospero’s conscience when needed (Youthful)
SEBASTIAN Alonso’s jealous sibling. Arrogant, insulting and ambitious. Antonio’s ally. Deliciously without morals and loyalty . Cunning and persuasive (circa 30-50+)
FRANCISCO/ADRIAN Merged character as a lesser dignitary/observer in Alonso’s court . Important to the structure of the play but without the burden of too many lines! Probably knows more than revealed about what’s going on. (20-40s)
TRINCULO Jester/Fool. Subservient ‘friend’ to Stephano. Sly & devious but a bit dim . Great character part ranging from resentful and jealous to broad comedy (20s+)
SPRITES Three feral,agile spirits who assist Ariel. Will take some of the lines in the greatly edited ‘goddesses scene’ but mainly they echo Ariel, torment other characters and lead the ‘magic’. Depending on who’s cast, the roles could develop in rehearsal to include singing , malevolence and dance.
CALIBAN Prospero’s ‘deformed slave’. However, the ‘deformity’ will be more mental/emotional than physical. Aggressive and amoral. Vulnerable to flattery and seduction but capable of being resentful, cunning and sly. (20’s – 40’s)
FERDINAND King Alonso’s son. Charming, fun, over-indulged and probably a bit shallow! Boasts of his sexual conquests and falls in love with Miranda at first sight! Naive and lovable. (20’s)
MIRANDA Prospero’s daughter, trapped on the island since an infant. Naive but not wet! Feisty, independent, sexually frustrated, hot-headed and outspoken. (Teens/20’s)
STEPHANO Cook/Butler. Clever and sexy. A bit rough and knows how to handle men. Controls Caliban and Trinculo with just enough flirtation but ruthless and ambitious (30+ ish?)

ALONSO King of Naples. Misguided but true at heart. Grieving and remorseful for the ‘death’ of his son. Trying to hold the court together but unaware of Sebastian’s plotting (50+)
ANTONIO Prospero’s brother. Who plotted to usurp the Dukedom and destroy Prospero. Ruthless, sneering, self-serving , violent and persuasive. The focus of Prospero’s revenge and conflict about forgiveness (40+)
Probably female (but likewise see what happens at auditions!)
GONZALO Court elder ridiculed by younger but dignified, true and moral. Secretly rescued Prospero and Miranda to the safety of the island. Can be pompous and a bit long-winded (less than in the unedited script!) but essentially honest, strong and good. (50+)
Sunday 28th January 2018 10.30am – 5pm & Mon 29th January 2018 7pm to 10pm at the Salisbury Club, Mill Road, Cambridge.
Auditions will be held individually at a pre-arranged time. To book an audition time or for more information please contact the director at email@example.com stating whether you want to audition for a particular part and what the times you are available. You will then be emailed with a confirmed time and the relevant audition pieces. You will not be required to memorise these but will be able to familiarise yourself with them before the audition.
When you book your audition slot, you’ll have two options available:
If you are auditioning for a specific role you will be sent the relevant audition piece by email (if auditioning for ‘Sprites’ or Ariel this will also include some movement and possibly singing work)
If you would prefer to have an ‘open’ audition for the production there will be a general Shakespeare speech which you’ll be asked to prepare
In either case, during your audition you’ll be asked to perform the extract in different ways and with varying emotions expressed.
Rehearsals will run from February 26th until the performance dates. We will primarily rehearse on Monday and Thursday evenings at the Salisbury Club, Mill Road, Cambridge. Additional rehearsals will be held during these weeks subject to availability and possibly on one weekend during this period. However, as only one scene in the play requires the whole cast, you would only be called for the rehearsals relevant to each character.

Combined Actors of Cambridge will be presenting Lear’s Daughters by Elaine Feinstein and the Women’s Theatre Group as their entry for the Sawston and Cambridge Drama festivals in 2018. The play will be directed by Chris Avery. Lear’s Daughters is a “prequel” to King Lear, looking at the lives of the sisters as children and young adults.
On a distant island a man waits.
Robbed of his position, power and wealth, his enemies have left him in isolation. But this is no ordinary man, and this no ordinary island. Prospero is a magician, able to control the very elements and bend nature to his will. When a sail appears on the horizon, he reaches out across the ocean to the ship that carries the men who wronged him. Creating a vast magical storm he wrecks the ship and washes his enemies up on the shore. When they wake they find themselves lost on a fantastical island where nothing is as it seems.
